The Mountain of Suffering & Sacrifice

No one knows exactly the hill that Jesus was crucified. We do know that it was on a hill outside of the city walls of Jerusalem. The hill was called “Golgotha” or the Place of the Skull because the rock formation looked like a skull. Nevertheless, a small mountain or hill was a part of the crucifixion. Jesus had to carry his own cross to Golgotha until in immense agony He could no longer carry it alone. Once atop the hill, Jesus was crucified. So, the son of God and the savior of this world was murdered on a small mount called Golgotha.

The account of Jesus’ suffering and murder is recorded in all four gospels. It is an account of extreme cruelty and brutality. Jesus’ was shamed and mocked – tortured and murdered. Why did this happen? Why did Jesus have to suffer and die? Because of us. He willingly sacrificed Himself to the point of a brutal death on a cross to give us access to God’s saving grace and mercy.

For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation. (Romans 5)

Jesus painfully ascend Golgotha so that we could be reconciled to God. He suffered on that mount so that we would have the opportunity to know remain enemies with God.

Since Jesus willingly climbed the mount of suffering and sacrifice for us, if we are to wear the name of Christ then we too much climb that mountain. Paul and Peter tells us

I appeal to you therefore, brothers,[a] by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. (Romans 12:1)

For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. (1 Peter 2:21)

Jesus told his followers 21 times “Follow Me.” The most poignant of those time Jesus simply stated:

“If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.” (Mt. 16:23 / Mark 8:34 / Luke 9:23)

In order to follow the Lord we must take up His cross and climb the mount of suffering and sacrifice. #TheMountainsofGod #MountaineeringForGod
