Loving those that love us is much easier than love strangers and exponentially easier than loving an enemy. But, as followers of Christ we are commanded to love those that do us harm and hate us. Jesus commands us to pray for those that abuse us. Why?
Because that is how God loves us. “…but God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us…For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of His son(Romans 5:8-10).”
Jesus rhetorically asks, “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them (Luke 6:32).” Jesus flatly states – it is easy to love those who love you.
It is a command to love others which includes those we love. But, that love MUST include our enemies otherwise we don’t really have the love of God in us. We must learn to love like God loves and that includes loving our enemies.
Loving our enemies showcases God’s love on earth. It helps keep us humble. It provides us better perspective of others. It helps us see beyond ourselves.
Since today is the Lord’s Day and we worship Jehovah who came to this earth and died for His enemies – us- because He loved us so much – let’s thank God for loving us and think on how we can reflect God’s love into this world.
Who then is your enemy?
❓Family nemesis? Love them.
❓Political opponent? Love them.
❓Annoying coworker? Love them.
❓Personal assailant? Love them.
❓Nosey neighbor? Love them.
❓Religious opponent? Love them.
❓Rude boss? Love them.
❓Government official? Love them.
❓Oppessor? Love them.
This list goes on and on.
When we love those who do not love us and love those that actively seek us harm, we show God’s love.
So, how does Godly love act? Well…it loves its own enemies, does good to those that harm it, and prays for those that abuse it. And in so doing, you shine God’s love into this world. #LoveActs
