Not only does God send His soldiers to battle with the necessary equipment, He also equips them with fortitude and strength. But, He will only give us our gear if we follow His voice.
In Psalm 18, David declares that God is his refuge, fortress, Rock, and strength. The entire Psalm depicts how David calls out to God for strength and deliverance from his enemies namely King Saul. Near the end of the Psalm, David confirms he was able to pursue and defeat his enemies thanks to God’s help and praises God for His help. It is in this section that David states:
“For you equipped me with strength for the battle;
you made those who rise against me sink under me.” (vs39)
David plainly states that God gave him strength and courage in battle. It was God who made it possible for David to defeat his enemies. But why did God do this? Why did God equip David with strength and courage to face His enemies? The answer appears about halfway through the Psalm:
The Lord dealt with me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me.
For I have kept the ways of the Lord,
and have not wickedly departed from my God.
For all his rules were before me,
and his statutes I did not put away from me.
I was blameless before him,
and I kept myself from my guilt.
So the Lord has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
according to the cleanness of my hands in his sight. (vs. 20 – 24)
David declares the Lord rewarded him with the necessary equipment because of his righteousness. God was willing to deliver David from his enemies because David did not depart from God. David was blameless before God. He kept the Lord’s commandments thus the Lord rewarded Him with strength, courage, and ultimately victory. Throughout the Psalm, David thanks God for his equipment and victory.
David was one of God’s mightiest warriors on the spiritual battlefield. He was after all a man after God’s own heart. If we want to be this kind of soldier, then we must follow David’s example.
🪖 If we want to stand fully equipped to take on our enemies, keep your heart clean.
🪖 If we want to stand with strength and courage before our enemies, keep the ways of the Lord.
🪖 If we want to be ensured of victory, turn to the Lord for help.
