Vow of Thankfulness

In yesterday’s study, we learned that God declared thankfulness, and keeping your vows pleases Him more than ritual sacrifice and rote worship. We discussed the linkage between thankfulness and keeping promises to God. Psalm 56 offers us a little more insight on the link between thankfulness and promises. The Psalm was written by David during a time of great distress. In the Psalm, David appeals to God for deliverance from his enemies and declares that He trusts in God despite his fears and the situation. In is at the end of the Psalm that David makes the following statement:

I must perform my vows to you, O God;
    I will render thank offerings to you.

For you have delivered my soul from death,
    yes, my feet from falling,
that I may walk before God
    in the light of life.

Once again, we observe the connection between giving thanks and fulfilling vows made to God. David highlights that one of the vows he is committed to keeping is the vow of thankfulness: “I must perform my vows to you; I will render my thank offering to you.” Here, we see that expressing gratitude was a vow David faithfully kept to God. One only needs to read the Psalms to see how incredibly grateful David was for all that God had done for Him.

Once we become a servant of God, we vow our lives to God. Like David, we understand that God has saved our souls from death, and we trust God to deliver us from this life. Like David, we know that without God, we stumble; but, with Him, we walk in the light.

Because of these truths, we commit to following and trusting in God. Among the first vows we must uphold is the vow of thankfulness to God. Have you become a servant of God? Have you made your vow of thanksgiving to God? If you have, do you keep your promise of thankfulness? Remember, God saved your soul from death. Perform your vow. #KeepYourVow
