Now that we understand the importance of keeping the vows we make to God and recognize that He expects us to honor our promises, let us delve into a discussion about vows and promises in our service to Him.
The Psalms repeatedly discuss the role of vows in service and worship to God. Asaph and King David emphasize the importance of “paying vows,” “making vows,” and “keeping vows” to God. In Psalm 50, we see our first example:
Offer to God thanksgiving,
And pay your vows to the Most High.
Call upon Me in the day of trouble;
I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me.”
Psalm 50 focuses on what truly pleases God, emphasizing that since God has created everything and owns everything, ritual sacrifices are not what truly pleases Him. Instead, what pleases Him most is thanksgiving, trust, and obedience. I’d like to make two quick observations about making vows from Psalm 50.
First, the connection between thanksgiving and vows. When you read through all the different translations of the verse, each translation links offering thanksgiving and paying your vow to God. One of the translations I thought really highlighted this connection is the Contemporary English Version:
I am God Most High!
The only sacrifice I want
is for you to be thankful
and to keep your word.
This version offers a clearer sense of the connection. The Psalm itself is a lengthy discussion on what truly pleases God, and this version better emphasizes the perspective of God speaking within it. As a result, it becomes easier to identify the sections where God is speaking. Here, the connection becomes clear: the only sacrifice God truly desires is thanksgiving and the fulfillment of our promises to Him. Paying our vows to God is just as important to Him as offering thanksgiving and gratitude.
The second observation is the connection between paying your vows and serving or worshiping God. This link appears repeatedly throughout the Psalms. Paying your vows or keeping your promises to God is an act of service to Him. It reflects our gratitude for all that God has given us and demonstrates our recognition of His supreme authority over all things.
Psalm 50 is presented from God’s perspective, which is why this verse is so significant. God speaks through Asaph, revealing to us exactly what truly pleases Him. Thanksgiving & Promise – Keeping.
So, offer thanksgiving to God and pay your vows. #KeepYourWord
