If You Vow

When Moses delivered God’s law to the children of Israel, he included an extensive set of instructions regarding vows and oaths. Before he provided the detailed list, he told the people:

If a man vows a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by a pledge, he shall not break his word. He shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth. – Num. 30:2

Moses instructed the Israelites that if they made a vow, oath, or pledge to the Lord, they must not break it but faithfully fulfill everything they had promised.

From the very beginning of God’s recorded law, there is an emphasis on keeping your promises to the Lord. This tells us two very important things:

🤞It seems that while humanity tends to make promises or vows to God, keeping them often proves challenging.

🤞God does not approve of or tolerate broken promises. He feels so strongly about broken promises/vows that He included them in the law given to Moses.

How does this passage from the old law relate to us today? It reveals God’s perspective on the promises or vows we make to Him. Just as He instructed the Israelites, God expects us to approach our commitments to Him with great care. If we make a promise, He expects us to faithfully fulfill every word we have spoken.

These promises can range from marriage vows, service oaths, or bartered or conditional promises such as those made by King Hezekiah. Whatever promise, pledge, or vow you’ve made to God – He expects you to keep it. If you cannot or are struggling with a promise, pray to God and talk to Him about the promise and your struggles. He will hear you. He will help you. #KeepYourWord
