In the Night

The nights are challenging for me. I’m a very light sleeper and borderline insomniac. I also struggle with nighttime anxiety. Despite taking medication and staying consistent with exercise, some nights I find myself lying awake, unable to sleep—especially if one of my dogs wakes me up. Then, depending on where my mind takes me, I fall down the dark rabbit hole of fear, regret, guilt, and doom.

However, after writing out the entire book of Psalms, I’ve become much better at coping with the nights. The Psalms brought me immense comfort, teaching me how to honestly express my fears, worries, and regrets to God. Yet, some of my nights can still overwhelm me. So, what do I do when I find myself spiraling? There are several key verses in the Psalms I think about. One such passage is found in Psalm 119.

In the night, Lord, I remember your name,
that I may keep your law.

During the nighttime, David turned to God and reflected on His name. God’s presence and His laws brought David comfort and focus during his late night watches.

So, when you find yourself awake and spiraling in the stillness of the night, remember God. He is as present and steadfast in the darkness just as He is in the light of day. #Remember
