When the Israelites were on the run from Pharaoh (and the Egyptian army) following the 10th plague, God used fire to protect and guide them.
By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. – Exodus 13
During the day it was a pillar of clouds and during the night it was a pillar of fire. The pillar of fire was to help them see at night and guide them in the darkness. Eventually, the Egyptian army caught up to the Israelites at the Red Sea. There, God moved the pillar of cloud and fire from the front to the back of the Israelites. Instead of being guides, the pillars became a protective barrier for the Israelites. God did not remove them until all the Israelites had crossed the Red Sea (Ex. 14).
God’s fire here in this event is used as a guide and protectant. The pillar of fire guided the Israelites at night and protected them when danger came. In the midst of that pillar of fire was God Himself.
During the last watch of the night the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion. (Ex. 14)
God’s fire guides us through the night watches. It protects us from the dangers of the darkness. If we follow God’s pillar of fire, then we will never be consumed by the darkness because God will protect us.
Just like the Israelites, God’s fire guides us and protects us through the dark times of our lives. We are never alone in the night. God is always with us. #GodsConsumingFire
