Isaiah records this question:
Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire?
Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?
It is a very poignant question. Isaiah immediately provides the answer:
Those who walk righteously
and speak what is right,
who reject gain from extortion
and keep their hands from accepting bribes,
who stop their ears against plots of murder
and shut their eyes against contemplating evil—
they are the ones who will dwell on the heights,
whose refuge will be the mountain fortress.
Only the righteous can dwell in God’s consuming fire. The sinners and the wicked will be destroyed. In fact, it was the sinners in Zion who asked the question of Isaiah. The prophet records that they were trembling when they asked their question because to ask is the answer. They knew the answer before they asked.
For the rest of the month, we will explore the answer to the question. We will examine how the righteous can dwell in God’s consuming fire while the wicked are consumed. Fire does one of two things: it purifies/strengthens or destroys. There is no middle ground. One day we must all stand in God’s consuming fire. Will we dwell? Or will we be consumed? #GodsConsumingFire
