It is traditionally believed that Jesus gave his famous Sermon on the Mount on the Korazim Plateau. It is a plateau located to the north of the Sea of Galilee and south of the Hula Valley. The highest point in the area is Filon Hill which is 409 meters above sea level. The exact location of the Sermon on the Mount doesn’t really matter. Jesus did give his most famous and influential lesson on the side of a mountain.
The Sermon on the Mount is considered to be one of Jesus’ most extensive and influential lessons. He begins by presenting a list of characteristics that His followers should have – none of which would make them mighty or powerful in this world. Jesus’ followers were to be poor in spirit, mournful, meek, peaceful, thirsty for righteousness, pure in heart, merciful, and persecuted. Christ taught his followers would be hated by this world like He was hated. But regardless of our reception on this earth, we are to continue to let our shine for God in this dark world.
Jesus taught us that not only our actions but also our thoughts can condemn us. It is not good enough to just not ACT. We must control our thoughts. We can not even think about evil things or want to commit sinful acts. The thinking is just as sinful as the doing.
Jesus taught us that it is not enough to just love and favor our friends and families. No, we must love our enemies because that is how God loves.
Jesus taught us how to pray and where to place our priorities. Jesus emphasized that we are to put our trust in God and God alone. If we do so, we can ask anything of Him.
He concluded with a reminder that the way to God is narrow and hard. Not everyone who believes they’ve found it actually has because they’ve trusted in themselves rather than God. And others, well they will just take the broad easier path because it is easier in the moment.
When Jesus finished his sermon on the side of that mountain, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
Now, Jesus most likely gave the sermon on that mountainside for acoustics and accommodations for the multitudes. But, it is interesting that inside of giving his most influential lesson on a beach or in a serene flat valley, the sermon was given on a mountain. Mountains provide us so many lessons for this life.
🏔️ Life is hard just like climbing a mountain.
🏔️ While there may appear to be many ways to the top of the mountain, only one way leads to the summit.
🏔️ You cannot rely on your own judgment to climb a mountain. You must follow the paths and trails, and use the appropriate gear and maps. To do anything else courts disaster.
The Sermon on the Mount is Jesus’ trail map to God’s summit. To climb God’s mountain, you must follow the correct path. #TheMountainsofGod #MountaineeringForGod
