If you’ve hiked up a mountain or climbed to the top, you know that mountains can sometimes be scary. You have to respect the mountain. The higher or deeper you go the more careful you should be. Mountains demand respect because they are greater than you. You cannot tame the mountain but the mountain can destroy you.
When prophesying to Nineveh, Nahum reminded them that God demands even more respect than the mountains…
The Lord is a jealous and avenging God;
the Lord is avenging and wrathful;
the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries
and keeps wrath for his enemies.
The Lord is slow to anger and great in power,
and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty.
His way is in whirlwind and storm,
and the clouds are the dust of his feet.
He rebukes the sea and makes it dry;
he dries up all the rivers;
Bashan and Carmel wither;
the bloom of Lebanon withers.
The mountains quake before him;
the hills melt;
the earth heaves before him,
the world and all who dwell in it.
Nahum gives us several reminders of why God demands our respect:
🏔️ God is a jealous God – He does not take it lightly when we elevate other things before Him.
🏔️ God is an avenging and wrathful God – He will protect His people and defeat His enemies.
🏔️ God is judge – He by no means will ever clear the guilty.
🏔️ God controls nature – the storms, the winds, the seas, the rivers, the land, and the mountains all quake and bow down to God.
Yet with all these realities about God, Nahum provides us some comfort – while God is great in power, He is slow to anger. God doesn’t want us to be lost or for our souls to end up in eternal punishment but if we do not respect and obey Him, He will not clear the guilty.
If the mountains quake before God and we quake before the mountains, then we should most definitely quake before the power of God. #TheMountainsOfGod #MountaineeringForGod
