The mountains are breathtaking. They are ancient. As John Denver wrote, life is old there, older than the trees. It is no wonder ancient societies either worshipped or worshipped at the feet of mountains. They reach up to the skies and go deep into the earth. Mountains remind us that we are but mere small mortals on this earth. While we are fragile and mortal, the mountains remain.
The Psalms are full of references to the mountains. David, the primary author of the Psalms, often took refuge in the mountains. The mountains showed David the power of God. They reminded David of God’s protection. They provided him with perspective.
It is one of these Psalms, I’d like to reflect on – especially since today is the Lord’s day. David writes in Psalm 65
Praise awaits you, our God, in Zion;
to you our vows will be fulfilled.
You who answer prayer,
to you all people will come.
When we were overwhelmed by sins,
you forgave our transgressions.
Blessed are those you choose
and bring near to live in your courts!
We are filled with the good things of your house,
of your holy temple.
You answer us with awesome and righteous deeds,
God our Savior,
the hope of all the ends of the earth
and of the farthest seas,
who formed the mountains by your power,
David tells us that when we pray to God the same God whose power formed the mountains answers our prayers. His awesome deeds, like forming the seas, the earth, and the mountains, prove to us that He has the power to answer any request, tackle any problem, and forgive any sin.
When you feel as though you are in a place in this life where no one can help or nothing can relieve your suffering, remember the God whose power formed the mountains awaits your prayers. But don’t miss what David says key to God’s help and relief:
🏔️ God helps those who fulfill their vows to Him.
🏔️ God answers the prayers of those who come to Him
🏔️ God forgives the sins of those who are overwhelmed by their sins.
So, praise be to the God whose power formed the mountains – who showed us His power and awesomeness by all of His righteous and awesome deeds – who answers our prayers – who forgives our sins. #TheMountainsofGod #MountaineeringForGod
