The Garden of Gethsemane

Remember back in the garden of Eden, man introduced sin and death into this world which severed their perfect relationship with God. Because of man’s sin, put into action His plan of salvation which He had already created knowing that mankind would be always chose to obey Him. He foreshadows this plan in Eden when He is punishing Satan. “You will bruise His heel but He shall bruise your head.” Here God is telling Satan you may be able to hurt the heel of my foot but there will come a time when my seed – Jesus – will crush your head.

Well, fastforward about 4000 years from the Garden of Eden, we find another garden of God – the Garden of Gethsemane.

Here – we see God’s foreshadowed end of Satan begin to truly play out in real time. This is the last night Jesus will spend as a free man and He knows it. He knows His betrayer and enemies are on their way to arrest Him to murder Him. In the garden, Jesus prays repeatedly asking God if there was another way to do His will. His human side so stressed and fearful that he begins to sweat blood as He begs God let this cup pass from Him. “Oh Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me, but nevertheless, not my will but yours be done (Matthew 26).”

But because of man’s sin all the way back in the original garden, Jesus pleas to His father were answered but not the way Jesus’ human side had hoped. God was going to fulfill His promise to Satan crush His head and He was going to bring about a pathway for mankind’s salvation. To do this, His only son – His perfect divine son – Jesus had to die for the sins of the world. Even though God’s answer to Jesus was no, He did not ignore Jesus and his pain and sorrow that night in the garden of Gethsemane. Luke tells us that God sent angels to strengthen, support, and soothe Jesus in the garden (Luke 22).

Satan was going to be able to begin bruise Jesus’ heel here in the garden of Gethsemane. His enemies would come, arrest Him, and begin their plan to bring murder Him.

Jesus – God in the flesh – had to enter this garden. The Garden of Gethsemane was crucial to God’s plan of salvation. This night had to happen. The origins of this night go all the way back to the Garden of Eden. Once sin came into this world, Jesus was going to enter the Garden of Gethsemane.

So, it was a dark night in the garden of Gethsemane. Satan believes He is close to winning His epic battle with God. But even in that darkness and even with God’s answer to Jesus as no – God was still there supporting and soothing Jesus through His sorrow.

The Garden of Gethsemane teaches us so many things.

🧑‍🌾 Jesus entered this dark garden to bring about God’s plan of salvation. Jesus did the unimaginable to bring about our salvation.
🧑‍🌾 Jesus’ obedience to God did not waiver when things became incredibly difficult and scary. Nor did it waiver when God responded no to His request. He persisted in His obedience.
🧑‍🌾 God did not abandon Jesus during His suffering. Even though this pain and sorrow had to happen to bring about God’s will, God knew it was difficult for Jesus and sent Him support via angels.

The events in the Garden of Eden link us straight to the night in the Garden of Gethsemane. To ensure we could be reunited with God due to our own sin, God sent Jesus His only son to die for us (John 3:15). Jesus went into that garden to begin the process of His trial and murder. He did that willingly so that through His death we could be saved. #lessonsfromthemastergardener
