Continuing with our gardening cleaning theme, David’s Psalm of Repentance clearly illustrates how we must work to make ourselves clean but can only be truly cleansed by God.
David had committed awful sins. He had stolen a a close friend’s wife, lied to his friend, and eventually had His friend murdered in an attempt to cover up His crimes and sins.
Eventually (with some spurring from God through Nathan) David comes to see what He has done for what it was – evil and sin. He begs God for forgiveness in Psalm 51.
He please with God to make Him clean again. He cries:
🧑🌾Purge me with hyssop (a medicinal plant) and I shall be clean. Hyssop was used to treat leprosy and various plagues. It was a very strong plant meant to purge you of the deepest illnesses. David is asking God to treat Him – to give him the medicine He needs to heal Him all of his uncleanness.
🧑🌾Wash me and I will become whiter than snow. David then ask God to wash Him so thoroughly He becomes whiter than pure snow. Here David is indicating He knows only God can make Him pure and clean again because nothing and no one can return him to that level of purity but God.
To be truly cleansed we must follow David’s pattern. We must aknowlesge our uncleanliness. We must admit to God that we are sick and in need of healing and cleansing. Only then will God treat us with hyssop and wash us to become whiter than snow. #lessonsfromthemastergardener
