I love mountains. There is something indescribable about standing at the foot of a mountain as you make your ascent. And, that feeling is amplified by 1000s once you reach the top. Mountains remind me how insignificant I am – how small I am – how young I am – how breakable I am – how limited I am. You stand at the top and it just takes your breath away. Every ascent humbles me and reminds me of my place in this creation and universe.
The mountains were repeatedly a source of perspective to David as well. He writes:
“By your awesome deeds do you answer us with righteousness, O God of our salvation, to the hope of all the ends of the earth and the farthest seas; the one who by His strength established the mountains…” – Psalm 65
“The mountains melt like wax before the Lord, before the Lord of all the earth.” – Psalm 97
“In His hand are the depths of the earth; the mountains are also His.” – Psalm 95
I firmly believed God created mountains to help us visualize and realize and experience humility. They tower over us. They are incredibly difficult to climb. They exist and will continue to exist before and after us. They do not need our help nor do they need our advice. They provide us perspective. They remind us how small we really are. They are difficult to climb. And they are impossible to summit if you’re prideful during the climb.
Solomon writes later in Proverbs that pride goes before a fall. You will fall climbing the mountain if you don’t take the mountain and its climb seriously.
Mountains have a way about reminding you of your true position in this world and they remind you just how fragile you actually are. And yet the mountains were made by God. They answer to God. They are just a small taste – a tiny extension – of God’s awesomeness. The mountains melt like wax before Jehovah the maker of the universe. And after the mountains fade away, God will remain.
So, the feeling of insignificance and humility one feels gazing up at a mountain should be small compared to the feelings of insignificance, fragility, and humility we should feel when we gaze up beyond the mountains and heavens to God. Nothing and no one has been, is, or will be greater than God. And that reality should bring us to our knees when we realize and accept our true position in this universe.
So, God has called us to live a life of humility – to live a life as though we are always at the foot of mountains. He has called and commanded us to humble ourselves before Him and one day if we do so He will lift us up – He will bring us to the top of the mountain. But we will only make it to the top if we humble ourselves at the bottom and during the ascent otherwise we will fall and great will be our fall.
Stand at the foot of God’s mountains. Humble yourself before the maker of the universe and in doing so, He will one day lift you up to the summit of His mountain – Mount Zion. #CreatedForMore #APurposeDrivenLife
