People sometimes use the word worship flippantly. They’ll worship pop stars or sports icons. Some people hero worship. Some people worship politicians and institutions. Others worship ideas and philosophies. But that worship is empty and hollow because it yields no returns. And frankly those folks, ideas, and institutions just are not really deserving of worship. If fact by worshipping them, you’ve turned them into an idol because there is only one who is worthy of our perpetual praise and adoration. God – the maker and sustainer of the universe.
Our life’s purpose is to kneel down and worship the one who made us and redeemed us. The Psalmist proclaims – Come! Let us kneel before our Maker!
When you find out that the people or institutions you deeply revere are disappointing and flawed and not worthy of worship, what do you do? Do you look for a new flawed idol to worship? One crafted by the world made to keep your eyes away from the true God? Or, do you seek out the only God worthy of worship? He will never disappoint you. He is perfect in every way. He made the universe, your soul, and everything in between.
Don’t waste your life in vain and empty idol worship. Nothing and no one this world has to offer is worthy of your reverence and worship. Every icon and idol from this world will disappoint you and every single one will fade into history. And when all other empty idols fade – only one God will remain…Jehovah the maker of heaven and earth.
So, spend your life worshiping the God who made you and who loves you so much He came to this earth and died to redeem you.
