Lamb of God

Lambs symbolize innocent and perfection. It is why they were chosen by God to be the sacrifice for sins under the Old Law. And even before the Old law was instituted, lambs were used by God. Abraham on his ascent to sacrifice Isaac told his son that “God would supply them the lamb (Genesis 22). Later, the Israelites were commanded by God to sacrifice a lamb and use its blood in their door frame to keep hand of death striking down their first born (Exodus 12). The lamb’s blood would be the sign for God to Passover their house during the 10th plague.

The death of a lamb provided appeasement of God’s wrath for individual sins and enabled God’s punishment “death” to Passover Israelites homes while in Egypt.

Yet as sweet and perfect and innocent as lambs were, they could not appease God’s wrath forever. Man had to pay for its sins. So, to prevent man from having to die themselves for their sins, God provided His own lamb as He did for Abraham. He provided Jesus.

John proclaimed when he saw Jesus walking along the Jordan River, “Behold! The Lam of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29)!”

God sent Jesus to be our lamb so once again and for one final time God’s justice would be appeased.

So, Jesus, the lamb of God came and died for our sins. And now, the angels and saved shout praise in Heaven to the Lamb of God who brought salvation to the world. “Salvation belongs to to God who sits on the throne and to the Lamb of God (Rev. 7:10)!” The Lamb of God has conquered all the forces of darkness (Rev. 17:14)!

One day we too will sing the song of the Lamb “Great and mighty are your deeds! Praise be to the Lamb of God – the Savior of our souls!”
