Dem Bones song is a song loads of children grow up singing… “Well, your head bone connected to the neck bone…” and so forth and so on until you sang a song about the entire skeleton system. But all the connections start at the head.
Paul tells us who our head is…Jesus. Jesus is the head of the church. We are just members of His body. We do what the head tells us to do. And the church isn’t a Hydra or Cerebus – it doesn’t have multiple heads. There is one. One head and it is Jesus.
What does that mean for us? Three big things:
- The church is His no one else’s. No one can claim to be the head. There’s only one and it’s Jesus.
- Since Jesus is the head, that makes us just parts of His body. We are just members of Jesus’ body.
- Since we are just the members, we have no say in what the body does or does not do. The arm doesn’t get to tell the foot what to do and it for sure doesn’t get to tell the head what to do. We respond and obey the head otherwise we aren’t part of the body.
If we want to be part of Christ body, we must accept those facts. There is just one head – Jesus. We are just mere members. And members do not dictate to the head, the head makes all the decisions. We just obey.
If you find yourself in a place where there are claims of being part of Jesus’ body but actions that do not align with His words, then you should think carefully about what that means for you. There can be only one head and it’s Jesus. Everything and everyone else is not just connected to Him but must also obey Him. If they don’t, then they aren’t part of Christ body.
Remember, all the other bones connections originate with the Head bone.
“…for Christ is the head of the church which is His body…” (Ephesians 5:23)
