And you shall call Him…

Names are incredibly important in the Bible. They not only serve as individual identifiers (as our names do) but also were chosen for specific reasons and to communicate specific traits about that person.

⭐️ Abraham “father of many generations.”
⭐️ Elijah “Jehovah is my God.”
⭐️ Elisha “God is my salvation.”
⭐️ Joshua “God is my deliverance.”
⭐️ Moses “drawn out.”
⭐️ Peter “stone.”

Those are just a few. Names carried meaning.

This month lots and lots and lots of people will be talking about Jesus. You’ll hear his name a lot. So, because His name will be on the minds of millions, we are going to study the names given to Jesus. Each day we will look at a different name to learn more about Jesus and who He really is.

If you like writing scriptures or taking notes, you’ll find our entire month’s schedule below. Write out each verse and the name associated with Jesus. I’ll be drawing a word cloud to share at the end of the month with y’all. I’d love to see everyone make their own to share!

So to begin, Jesus was given his name by God Himself. We read in Matthew 1:21 that Joseph was visited by Gabriel who told him what he should name Jesus:

“She [Mary] will bring a son to birth, and when she does, you, Joseph, will name him Jesus – ‘God saves’ – because He will save His people from their sins.”

Jesus’ name means “God saves.” And why did God pick this name His son? Because it would be through Jesus that God would save us from our sins. So, every time you hear or say Jesus what you are really proclaiming and hearing is “God saves!”

From the very beginning Jesus’ name mattered. It defined the purpose for his birth, life, and eventual death. God sent Jesus to save the world from sin!

Join us as we study the names of Jesus – the one God sent to save the world!
