What is truth? Isn’t this a question society is constantly struggling to answer? Your truth. My truth. Historical truth. Evidential truth. Situational truth. We’ve got a truth for everything and scenario. So, it’s no wonder as a society we continue to search for and grapple with the concept of truth.
But our society isn’t the only one. During Jesus trial, Pilate asked Jesus, “what is truth?” He too grappled with the what he was observing – Jesus’ innocence – vs what the Pharisees were saying about Jesus. Was He a king? Was he not? What was truth?
Perhaps Pilate was being cynical and sarcastic with Jesus. “What is truth” more of a jeer mocking the idea of singular truth. Perhaps he was sincere and really did want to know what truth was. It’s hard to tell but the question spoke still resounds with us today. “What is truth,”
Thankfully we have the truth. God has given us the Word of Truth through Jesus. This word is the gospel of our salvation. Jesus died for our sins. He was raised from the dead and defeated sin and death. Jesus is the truth. He said so himself “I am the truth.” It is not a coincidence to me that it is only John who records Jesus statement, “I am the truth” and Pilate’s question later during Jesus’ trial – “what is truth?” Jesus had already answered this question – He is the truth.
So many people wander through life looking for the answer to that question. Like Pilate perhaps they start our sincere but end of cynical because according to the word there are multiple truths. It becomes confusing and contradictory. So, frustration and disillusionment set it.
But Paul tells us that through Jesus God has given us His word of truth which is the gospel of salvation. God’s truth will never change and it will never die and it will never lie. God’s truth points the way to salvation; it doesn’t confuse or misdirect.
Are you looking for the truth? Look no farther. God is given you access to THE TRUTH which has the power to save your soul.
