Spiritual Blessing: Lavishes Us

I love waterfalls. When I plan our hikes, I try to find trails that feature both alpine lakes and waters. The bigger the better. There’s something about watching them that is mesmerizing. They just keep pouring water down into the streams and lakes beneath them. The power in the water running down causing the loud roaring of water is one of my favorite sounds. You can hear the waterfall’s roar well before you see it. When you get close, you can feel the air whip around your face from the power of the water and feel the sprinkling of the water as it just pours and pours out of the mountain.

Reading Ephesians this morning and seeing Paul use the word lavish – the image of a waterfall immediately came to my mind. Unending giving. Excessive provision. Profuse generousity. Like a waterfall that is pouring out of the mountain side, so is God’s generousity. Unending. Excessive. Profuse. He lavishes us with the riches of His grace, mercy, and forgiveness.

To an outsider looking in, God’s generosity would seem over the top. But to God it is a sign of eternal love. And to us, it is source of perpetual provision. Like a waterfall, God’s grace, mercy, and love are unending. They are so powerful they not only provide us with all we need (both physical and spiritual) but also change who we are and will become. God’s waterfall push out the dams and debris we’ve filled our lives with. It takes us to still waters of the lake at the bottom of the mountain.

Nothing can stop the lavish and powerful flows of God’s waterfalls of grace, mercy, and love. He extends it to all of us for our entire lives and beyond. He provides us with all we need and more. He leads us to the still waters. He changes our lives so that we can be help bring others to Him.

Come and stand before Lord’s waterfall. Soak in the cool waters of His grace and love. See the unending nature of His generosity. Hear the power of His voice – the voice of many rushing waterfalls (Revelation 1:5). Follow His voice to the still waters below the mountain.

Come and see that the Lord is good!! Blessed are those who trust in the Lord. (Psalm 34)
