We seem to have a love/hate relationship with the idea of fate. Sometimes we are all about phrases like, “if it was meant to happen, it will.” Or “Let fate decide.” But we also frequently talking about “fighting fate” or “giving fate a hand” or “never leaving anything to fate.” There is an entire sub genre of romantic movies highlighting this back and forth. We like the idea of fate because it many ways it relieves of us personal responsible, guilt, or work ethnic. It was meant to be, it will be. But we are also terrified of leaving the most important parts of our lives up to chance and “fate.” We desperately want to control the path and outcomes in our lives.
Many people believe that God and His plan of salvation “fated” those who would be saved and who wouldn’t. You were born saved or not. And there’s really nothing you can do to become saved and or lose the salvation you were fated with from the day of your birth. What a tragic way of thinking about God’s plans for us.
Paul tells us God has left NOTHING up to fate. He predestined those who would be saved before the foundations of the earth. Those who walk holy and blameless before Him. It isn’t fate whether God saves you or not. It’s your decision to walk before God humbly and be holy. It is your life’s purpose. And, we were all given that purpose. Some of us just choose to ignore it.
We don’t have to cross our fingers and hope. God decided before the foundations of the earth were made the people who would be His…those who walk holy and blameless. God did not craft a predecided list of names of those who would become His…He made salvation the destiny of those who decided to walk with Him. And although He knows all, doesn’t mean He made the decision for anyone. He just knows who will embrace their destiny and who won’t.
God predestined our purpose.
God predestined the traits of those who would accept their purpose.
God predestined the outcome of those who walk blameless and holy before Him.
And Paul tells us, God did this all in love. Not
malice or capriciousness. Love. God wants us to know our life’s purpose. He doesn’t want us to walk aimlessly through life. God didn’t want us to believe that He left anything about our salvation to fate. He predestined it.
God took fate out of the salvation equation completely. He decided the plan. He decided the traits and path of those who would accept His plan. And He did it out of love so we wouldn’t be left in the dark or tricked into believing God has already selected the saved so there’s nothing you can do. So, why bother?! No! God predestined the choice that would lead us to salvation. Humility and obedience. And the choice is open to everyone!
In love, He illuminated our true purpose. Those who accept that our God given purpose, well, our “fate” is sealed. (See what I did there?!). It was decided before the foundations of the earth were even made. And what is our fate and destiny if we accept God’s purpose for our lives? Salvation.
So, don’t leave your life and the eternal resting place of your soul to fate. Walk holy and blameless before God. And, God will give you His salvation. He predestined it from before the beginning of time.
The choice is yours.
