Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

When we look in the mirror, we often see something we don’t like. We don’t like our outfit, hair, wrinkles, weight, the list goes on and go. We try to use the mirror to help us fix the things we don’t like but have you ever noticed you keep going back and there’s something always wrong? It’s not your reflection that is or isn’t changing (depending on your goal), it is your mind altering the truth of the image to you. Our mind plays dirty mean tricks on us all the time. It is always telling us we aren’t good enough or something else about us is wrong. So it’s not the mirror your really combatting – it’s your inner self talk.

And what’s worse is our self talk isn’t just negative about our appearance, it can be cruel and unforgiving about our character, inner person, and past mistakes. It rails at us that we aren’t good enough. It condemns us by hurling all our mistakes and faults at us. It yells God can never forgive that – God doesn’t love someone like you. The cruel self talk destroys our own confidence and most importantly our trust in God.

So, John reminds us – when times like this happen (and they will – all the time) remember – God is greater than your inner self talk. He is greater than the our heart and mind that is unforgiving and cruel. And, He knows everything. He knows we are trying. He knows we really remorse for our mistakes and sins. He knows we aren’t perfect. He knows we love Him. He knows.

And you know what – that cruel self talk – it’s true author is Satan because he wants us to doubt God and hate ourselves. He seeks to create a vicious ugly cycle to keep us tied to him. And there’s only one who can break his cruelty wheel. God.

God is greater than our minds.
God is greater than our hearts.
And, God knows everything.
