As a kid, I loved to watch the show “Are you afraid of the dark?” A kid’s scary anthology show. I’d watch it on Thursdays while I waited for my mom to pick me up from piano lessons. I love a good scare and always have. So, I never really was scared of the dark but my sister was terrified of it. So most nights she slept with me. (The role of a big sister knows no boundaries.) And well, lots of people – kids and adults – are scared of the dark. And even I turn my scentsy on if I’ve binged watch too much horror. So, why is the darkness scary? People are scared because they can’t see what’s going on in the room with them. They are scared because they can’t see where they’re going or the next step. They are scared because monsters – both imaginary and real – come out at in the darkness because they feel more comfortable there lurking in the dark. So, what do people do when they become scared in the dark? The turn on the light. They get a night light. They light a match. They drive the darkness away with light.
Satan is the ultimate monster lurking in the dark. He preys on our fears and weakness. He tries to get us either become comfortable in the darkness with him or feel like we can’t escape the dark so we stop trying. Why? Satan only knows the darkness and he cannot abide the light. Satan is scared of the light. The light exposes him. It helps people find their way. The light drives away fear and uncertainty. And, I’m not just talking about light…I am talking about THE LIGHT.
God is the ultimate source of light! He is the author of light! God is Light. Darkness has no chance against the creator of Light. Even the shadows are destroyed by the brightness of God.
Darkness is the opposite of God. It’s the absence of His presence. It is way as the plagues got progressively worse for the Egyptians – the ninth plague was complete and utter darkness. No light could penetrate the dark. Moses records that the Egyptians could feel the darkness it was so thick and pervasive. Darkness was the last of the natural or earth or weather based plagues. Darkness covered Egypt. The darkness was so terrifying it nearly convinced Pharaoh to completely let the Israelites God.
Thankfully none of us had to experience that darkness. The only time that darkness will return is after the second coming of Jesus. Those who yielded their lives to Satan – the master of the darkness – will be thrown into the eternal pit. There will be eternal darkness there because God is light and His presence will never even touch the boundaries of Hell.
Are you lost and scared in the dark? Desperately looking for the light switch or a match but Satan keeps putting up obstacles and He keeps the light switch moving and hard to find. Stop giving him power over your light. Turn to God. He will turn on the light for you. He will rescue you from Satan’s dark deep pit. He will drive away the darkness. And once you’ve let Him light your world – He will never leave you unless YOU turn the light back off.
Don’t let the darkness swallow you up. God will reach down and bring you out of the dark. All you’ve got to do is ask Him. He is waiting to dispel your darkness. Don’t stay in the darkness here because there will come a day when God will no longer offer you the opportunity to access His light and then you will be the dark forever and you will be trapped in the dark with your fear and regret for all time.
You may be afraid of the dark but darkness fears God.
