Seal My Heart

The second half of Song of Solomon is a long poetic exchange how of attractive both Solomon and His wife find each other. But tucked in the poetic exchanges is the line that stuck up to me this morning:

Set a seal upon my heart, as a seal on arm, for love is as strong as death, jealousy is as fierce as the grave.

Here Solomon’s wife is proclaiming she wants a seal of ownership placed on her heart so that it never wanders and a seal on her arm as a visible marker to herself and others that she is taken. She belongs to another. For as strong as love is so is jealousy.

This reminded me of the multiple times we are told to put God’s law on our hearts and seal it with His words. To write or tattoo it on our foreheads as a constant visible reminder to us and others that we belong to God. This is meant to help us not wander away from God to to let others know whom we belong to because we serve a jealous God. God will not tolerate us turning to other gods or ideas or things to worship and serve. We belong to Him.

So, seal your heart and put a seal on your arm. Do not let your heart wander. And be sure everyone who sees you know to whom you belong. God is a jealous God. He will not share our hearts. They are either His
completely or not at all.
