The Empty Life

The book of Ecclesiastes has always been a difficult study for me. I tend to find it depressing. At every turn Solomon is pointing the vanity or pointless of something in this life. And sometimes leads me to throw up their hands and say, “okay then, what’s the point of life then!?”

But Solomon would exclaim back to me, “AHHA! We are getting somewhere now!”

The point of Solomon’s Ecclesiastes is exactly to lead you to that question and for Solomon then to provide you the answer. But Solomon’s answer in this book is not just rooted in the Godly wisdom provided him but also in a lifetime of experience seeking the answer for himself. He provides evidence and proof through experience that the superficial and earthly priorities will end up being pointless and empty.

So, to begin Solomon tells his audience that what has been done will be done again and what has been will be again. Nothing under the sun is new. While this statement can be super depressing, it should lead to some us to some important questions and observations:

🕰️It should led us to ask: what am I doing with my life that will matter then? If everything has been done and everything is just repeated, what is the point of my life?

🕰️It should also provide us comfort when the world around us seems unstable or overly wicked, what has been will be again – meaning this has happened before and will happen again as long as humans live on this earth. We are predictable creatures.

🕰️It should lead us to humility because nothing we do is new. There is no room for arrogance and pride in this statement. We contribute nothing new to this world.

🕰️It should lead us to ask if this earth sees nothing new under the sun, then what should I spend time and energy really focusing on? In other words, where should my priorities lie then?

Solomon will answer all these questions. He tells his audience – I set out to find out the meaning of life and to answer these questions. I looked everywhere and tried everything. Let me tell you what I discovered.

Ecclesiastes has become one of my favorite books. I’m not one of those people who has to try something to realize it was a bad choice. I much prefer to observe and learn from others before I proceed. Here in this book Solomon provides you all his life lessons and mistakes. It is a book of life experience is meant to help others not make the same mistakes.

Ask yourself today – are you willing to learn from Solomon’s life experiences? He tells us nothing is new and everything is and will be repeated. So, are you willing to listen Solomon as he teaches you what actually will matter when the sunsets on the final day? Or, will you continue in your vain and empty life?
