Cheating is so rampant in society and has been through human history. Cheating of all kinds. People cheat their taxes. People cheat the legal system. People cheat on their spouses. People cheat on their work timesheets. People cheat at games and sporting events. People cheat academically. Loads of folks live by phrases like “if you aren’t cheating, you’re not trying” or “it’s only cheating if you get caught.”
Now, cheating is a real sore subject for me. I’m
a family member at a liberal arts university. The amount of cheating I have to deal with is unreal. Students would rather spread more timing cheating than just doing their own work. It’s very frustrating. But sadly, students aren’t the only cheaters in our society. Cheaters are every where. Cutting corners. Stealing time. Gaming the system. All hoping to never get caught.
Solomon tells us that cheating – using unequal weights and measures is an abomination to God. It is repugnant. It is an affront to God when we cheat…on anything. God is perfect justice and fairness. He cannot coexist, support, befriend, or pretend He didn’t see when someone cheats.
Why is cheating an abomination to God? At its root, all cheating is a lie. It is deceitful. It is fraud. And God is the source of all truth. God is truth. Truth cannot exist with lies. Cheating is the exact opposite of God. To God, cheating / unequal weights and measures – is abomination because it is rooted in lies BUT masking as the truth. This is way God finds it so grotesque. When we cheat, we are trying to act honest all the while knowing we are lying.
So, while the world by tell you to do anything to get ahead. Or, it’s only cheating if you get caught. Or, cheating really isn’t that big of a deal. Remember, it is to God. To God, all forms
of cheating is an abomination because it is rooted in unfairness, injustice, and deceit. And God is perfectly fair, just, and always honest. He will not tolerate cheaters.
So, check God’s syllabus and don’t violate His honesty policies.
