Only the fool rages

We are notorious for getting ourselves into trouble. We make bad decisions. We refuse to learn from the mistakes of others. We don’t listen to advice. We disobey the rules/laws. And, why do we are like this? Well, because we want to do what we want to do. We’ll just deal with the consequneces later (if there are any, right?)

We act this way about everything – from big things to small things:
❌ We speed.
❌ We live unhealthy lifestyles.
❌ We fudge our our finances.
❌ We lie.
❌ We cheat on our spouses.
❌ We disobey and disrespect our parents.
❌ We steal.
❌ We murder.
❌ We procrastinate.
❌ We gossip.

Truly, the list could go on and on of examples of things we do that we know we shouldn’t but wr do them anyway. Why? Well for two reasons. 1. We are selfish creatures. We want what we want and that’s the end of that. But we often tell ourselves there’s more to our decision than just self-interest and desire. 2. We convince ourselves that the consequneces for our decisions (which we know deep down are wrong) will somehow we different than the same decision has been for the countless others who have made the decision and mistake.

In other words, we lie to ourselves and then believe our own lies.

When these decisions do lead to ruin and negative consequences, how often do we blamecast? We blame others. We blame the system. We blame society. And, we even blame God.

Solomon tells us that when our bad decisions lead us to ruin, it is the fool who blames God.

Only a fool would blame God for his or her own mistakes. Why? Well…
🔹God didn’t make you do anything.
🔹God has given us His instructions on how to live to avoid ruin. (He didn’t keep it a secret.)
🔹God has given us commandments and told us if we break them there will be negative consequneces.
🔹God has provided us countless examples of both godly and ungodly people who made bad decisions and showed us the consequences of those bad decisions.

Yet, somehow we still think it’s God’s fault. Our hearts yell out, “How you let this happen to me God!?” That is a foolish and irreverent and stubborn and self-centered question.

Instead, we should model our hearts like King David. David did exactly this. He stole his trusted friend’s wife and killed him to cover it up. When David was confronted by God he didn’t blame God or Bathsheba or anyone else. He owned his sin. He accepted there would be consequences. He prayed for mercy and forgiveness.

When we act like David and make a foolish self centered sinful decision – we should acknowledge our mistakes and sins to God. Tell Him we are sorry. Accept that there will be some form of consequences in this earth but pray for God’s mercy and forgiveness.

Only a fool rages against God. Don’t be a fool.
