Bottomless

When I visited Carlsbad National Park, my husband and I visited as much of the caves as possible. We took the deep tour to the Big Room which is the largest under ground cave in North America. We kept going down and down and when we eventually got there the guide turned of all the lights. It’s the darkest place I’ve ever been. The darkness seemed unending. But the ranger eventually lit a match and boom – even with that faint light – you can see everything. Now, we continued our tour and even looked down into the “Bottomless Pit.” The pit isn’t in fact bottomless, it is approximately 140 feet or so which is still super impressive. You look down that pit and the darkness – the empties just continues on and on and on. It is a soberly and amazing experience all joined into one. And, if you like caves, I’d highly recommend the visit.

Solomon teaches us that there are at least two things that are actually bottomless – they are never ending – death (Sheol and Abaddon) and man’s desires.

It is so interesting to me that Solomon paired the bottomless pit of death with man’s desire. The connection should just jump off the page when you read it. Man’s desires will lead us to the bottomless pit. We will want more and more and more and that pursuit of more will eventually take us to the pit.

But, thankfully David repeatedly wrote in Psalms that there is something else that is endless. God’s mercy and love. (Psalm 136, 100, 118, and more).

God is the only one who can save us from ourselves and the bottomless pit of death. Jonah prayed this exact prayer “you brought my life up from the pit. (Jonah 2). David wrote the same thing repeatedly in the Psalms. “God will save my soul from Sheol.” “God rescued my life from the pit.” (Psalm 30 & 49).

Don’t let your desires lead you to the bottomless pit. Let God teach you how to control your desires and trust in His ways.

There is no escaping the pit unless God himself who rescues you from it. And He will only do so if we obey and trust in His eyes and not our own.
