Close or Far?

As humans we measure and understand things on a spectrum. Things or relationships can be close, far, or in between. Actions can be positive, negavite, neutral, or in the gray. People are good, evil, or in the middle. It is very hard for us to see and deal in exacts because we don’t have all knowledge or understanding. We can’t see the future. We can’t hear people’s thoughts. We don’t know motives. It is hard to make absolute judgments because we rarely know all the facts to draw hard and fast lines.

Now, sometimes that is just the nature of being human. Other times it is how we justify ourselves and our friends. I’m not a “murderer” but I mean who could be like the Apostle Paul? I don’t slander but the little white lie at work doesn’t matter. I am not a thief; I’m just a little envious. The situations are unending and it’s the word “but” that gets us into trouble. We seek to justify ourselves my comparing ourselves or actions to those whose sins we believe are so much worse than ours.

We must stop thinking that way!

Why? Because God does not see us that way. We are not “little wicked” but “mostly righteous.” Our actions are not “mildly sinful” while others are “extreme sinful.” We are either righteous or wicked to God. We are either trying every day to be more like Him or not. There is no middle ground.

Does this mean we are going to be perfect? NO! What it does mean is we have to try every day to be perfect like God is perfect. He cannot and does not fellowship with evil. But unlike humans, God does know everything. He knows our thoughts, our heart, or motives. So He can make absolute judgments about us because He knows everything about us.

So, we should live ourselves in the constantly trying to get closer to God not justifying why we are so far from Him. Because ultimately Solomon tells us God is far from the wicked but He so close to the righteous He hears their prayers.
