Look to the Mountains

One of my favorite Psalms is Psalm 121, which also features one of my favorite verses. The song is a Psalm of Ascent, Praise, and Confidence in God. It reads

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
    where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
    the Maker of heaven and earth.

He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.

The Lord watches over you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.

The Lord will keep you from all harm—
    he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
    both now and forevermore.

The Psalm begins with this idea of looking up to the mountains when you are in a troubling time. The idea here is looking up – to the most majestic thing on this earth – mountains. When we are facing hard times, we often lift our eyes up toward the skies or look to nature – it is natural impulse to do so. But why? The Psalmist tells us – because in our soul we know who made nature, carved the mountains, and painted the sky – Jehovah.

In times of trouble, we are not looking for help from a trivial source or a source that is unable to help us. We look to the one who created the mountains. The psalm goes on to explain just what that means for those who look to and beyond the mountains for help.

🏔️ God will not let your foot to slip – He will not let you fall.

🏔️ God watches over you during the night – He never leaves you alone in the dark.

🏔️ God protects you during the day – He provides shade from the heat of the sun.

🏔️ God keeps you from all harm – He shields you all the days of your life.

When we look up at the mountains, we see something amazing, powerful, immovable, old, bigger than ourselves and those facts help steady us and put our lives and problems in perspective. But it isn’t really the mountains that we see and that steady us…it is Jehovah, the maker of the mountains. #TheMountainsofGod #MountaineeringForGod
